Peters Twp. official's retirement approved: O-R 12-7-11

12/7/2011 3:33 AM

McMURRAY - After being on medical leave for almost two years, Peters Township School District administrator Thomas J. Hajzus' retirement was approved by the school board Monday.

Hajzus, the current assistant to the superintendent for operations, once served at high school principal. There was no discussion before the unanimous vote was taken to approve his retirement effective June 30.

He has been on medical leave since March 1, 2010. At the time of the leave, Hajzus cited the "massive stress" and "everyday conflicts that need attention," along with other issues that plague school administrators as his reasons for needing time off.

He worked in education for about 31 years. When requesting the leave, he did not specify a medical condition.

In February 2002, Hajzus was placed on administrative leave after telling then-superintendent Diane Kirk he was diagnosed with anxiety, panic attacks and depression.

After telling Kirk of his condition, he was placed in a newly created position of director of special programs and projects at the same salary. Hajzus called the new position a demotion and began legal action that ended in an settlement several years later.

Part of the agreement stipulated he was to receive annual financial payments of $20,000 to $25,000 until his expected retirement in 2013. In September 2010, the district and Hajzus amended the original agreement to permit a lump sum payment of the remaining $81,866

Lawrence R. Elliott Surveying, Inc. completed a pyrite evaluation at McMurray Elementary on Nov. 28. The original measurement showed no movement, according to Superintendent Nina Zetty; however, a second measurement revealed negative readings.

Zetty said not to worry—she believes it was “an error in measurement.” The full report and analysis will be available for review and discussion at the next Buildings and Grounds meeting, scheduled for Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m.

The board also approved a $1 million tentative Technology Budget for the 2012-13 school year. This budget will be included in the finalized General Fund Budget.

'Tis the Season to Make Peace

Board member Sue Smith followed comments from the floor with her wish for the new year.

"With lower revenues and a $900,000 (budget) cut, it has been one of the most difficult years for the board so far," she said. "My wish, as we begin as a new team, is to keep in mind peace on earth and good will toward all men."

Gregg agreed.

"Disagreeing isn't a bad thing," Gregg said. "As long as you respect each other's opinions."

"You can disagree without being disagreeable," she said.
