Do you all realize that over one third of the school district employees in this school district make over $90,000 a year?
Wow -- the salary that leaves me the most incredulous is that of Stoehr. As most parents of any child in McMurray know, he is not effective as a principal, and his relationship with teachers is strained at best. With all of the funding cuts the school district is experiencing, how can any administrator receive a raise! I have been at my job for 15 years and took a pay cut this past year. Disappointing....
Let's not name call. Mr. Stoehr does a fine job and everyone isn't going to like every administrator. Some of the best we ever had were disliked by some people. As far as you having to take a pay cut, oh well. Administrators work many, many hours, have at least a masters and possibly a doctorate, and have to put up with parents like you, the superintendent, and others.
We just arrived back in the states after staying with family overseas. We returned to find out that the graduation project our child was working on is probably gone.
Why was this graduation project deletion information not communicated to parents before school was over? This is not funny.
The board has obviously urgently addressed after school gaming. Why is the school board doing nothing about this graduation project? How are they permitting children to be treated like this?
We cannot buy books, we have to pay to play but lets give everyone an increase in pay.....you have to be kidding me! Who is running this district...further into the ground?
Wake up everyone before it is too late. Our board has no clue as to what the real world is.....remember there will be a write in for November stay tuned!
A middle school principal making HOW MUCH?!
Yeah and those of us with doctorates, on call 24/7, that took pay cuts, who work ALL YEAR in the medical field are certainly more deserving of salary cuts, and insurance cuts, than ptsd teachers. We must worship a teachers sacrifice because nobody else is more deserving. Our family worked hard to move here because we wanted the best educcation for our kids and they are not getting it! (Yes, I know the mantra..."so move or go to private school". It is already done!)
Our students and families are making sacrifices in this tough economy. Where is the PTSD dedication to education that they so often tout?
Funny they didn't mention in this article the $40,000 raise some of the teachers get this year for their "jump" to $90,000+ so they get their huge pension.
The middle school principals salary is comparable to salaries in the majority of districts. In addition, he has a doctorate and part of the reason his pay is where it is because he has been here for a number of years. He is also in charge of the character education program in the entire district. Go look up middle school principal salaries for Baldwin, USC, Mt. Lebanon, N. A., Hampton, I can go on and on. HIs isn't even the highest. And he comes to work every day!
Wow, life is unfair isn't it. I guess those people complaining about how much the administrators make were denied the opportunity to persue that as a career choice. If you are so upset about how much they make, then why don't you go back to school and become one.
I totally agree. If you look up the top 10 stressful jobs in America, guess what, Educator is #4. Teachers, Administrators, if you aren't one, you have no idea the hours and what they have to cope with. As the earlier poster said, if you don't like it and think they make so much money for an easy job, go get your certification and try to get a job. No one is stopping you. Just because this is one of the worst school boards people say we have had and it is one of the worst superintendents we have had, do NOT put our teachers and building administrators to blame for out district.
Then why are the teachers always complaining about building administration in a classroom full of students?
Nice spin.
How about that? BP did a $50 flat fee for everyone from 7-12 grade. That doesn't leave any questions or hurt booster group participation.
That would be too easy for this school district. They wouldn't make enough money from the kids that participate in two sports and several clubs.
Teachers earn every penny (there are a few slackers). I've been there, it's a HARD job.
The school board is not paid but, should be making the best sound decisions for ALL our kids, especially at the time of budget cuts.

RE: article linked above
Sometimes, I really feel as if I live in a different township than the one our school board works for.
NONE of the school board members attended the President/Coaches' meeting at the high school to answer the literally dozens of questions regarding "Pay To Play" policies.
Someone should have been there. It was a very different picture than what this article describes.
NOBODY wants to see programs cut and wants all children to be able to participate. The planning and implementation of this new policy are so flawed. Many sports, marching band, and other activities have already started up with NO guidance on how to handle these fees. Collection of, determining hardship cases, and paying a salary of a coach are all put on the coach and booster group. The repercussions of the fees are going to be fewer student participants, fewer boosters participating, smaller and small groups having to foot coach/sponsor salaries that they already cannot afford to pay. The board left the new AD there to answer dozens of questions he had no answers for.
Were they all on vacation? Shameful.
"If you look up the top 10 stressful jobs in America, guess what,.."
ok? i did that.
i give up, whose list are you reading-the journal of lets have pitty parties for public school eomployees? ummmm....according to msnbc, the huffingtong post, newsweek and several other 2011 national news reports the ten most stressful jobs are:
"Commercial Pilot, Public Relations Officer, Senior Corporate Executive, Photojournalist, Newscaster, Advertising Account Executive, Architect, Stockbroker, Emergency Medical Technician and Real Estate Agent"
on the other hand, since ptsd administrative employees are so educated and it is so stressful to work here, they too are free to seek out other communities of taxpayers that are willing to pay for their expertise and inflated salaries. it is time for the taxpayers to get a voice. our school board is not representing anybody but themselves.
who is going to be the write in candidate?
I agree with Anonymous July 28 @9:24 am. Take a walk in a teacher's shoes for one day and you will have a whole new respect for what they deal with each and every day.
According to the school district we are paying the pay-to-play fee "to offset the cost of transportation, equipment, supplies and other expenses associated directly with student athletics and High School activities".
Now we are hearing.....
"In the current economic climate, the School District is seeking the financial help from Booster Groups. Booster Groups are requested to help the School District by providing the salary of the lowest paid coach in your sport. These funds will directly aid the School District by reducing the overall Athletic Budgets of all sports. The School District will provide each group with the total salary requested in each sport. The School District would prefer payment of the lowest-paid salary prior to the conclusion of the season."
We pay boosters and we pay to watch our children play games. The school keeps the profits from charging entry fees into athletic events. They are now making activities, that were intended to benefit students, into "for profit" events. This school board didn't bat an eye about this.
Here is a link to all teacher and administrative salaries in PA for 2010.
http://php.app.com/PAteachers10/search.php
It is quite evident where PTSD is in line with other districts in Western PA and also where it is not!
I am very disappointed with the decisions this school board has made with our current and future tax dollars. They have diminished the importance of education in the eyes of taxpayers and students in this school district.
one gentleman at a recent meeting expressed his pleasure with the new fields by stating other schools have much nicer than pt. other schools also have a much better academics and do not put the inability to plan curriculum offerings upon the students. i do not know about other school boards in this district, but this one is certainly not about academics and education. they have displayed that quite clearly!
Wait one minute here.
We know about the activity fee and it is needed. It is detailed on the district web site.
NOW I hear, from a booster organization, we are also supposed to pay for a coaches salary and possibly transportation fees? Yet this district just got a bond for 3 million dollar fields and handed out raises?
What the heck is going on here?
I looked up the ten most stressful jobs. I did not see teacher or any educational job on the list. What list are you looking at--something out of a teachers journal perhaps?
"I agree with Anonymous July 28 @9:24 am. Take a walk in a teacher's shoes for one day and you will have a whole new respect for what they deal with each and every day."
It is obvious that people here do not need convinced of this. Maybe your are trying to convince yourself? From people posting here it is evident the concern is the raises stated in this article; for administration. If you look at teachers salaries, IN GENERAL, they don't make much. You teachers here are pretty defensive of administrative salaries. They are to different things--Act 93 and salaries based upon the teachers contract.
"Teachers earn every penny (there are a few slackers). I've been there, it's a HARD job. "
well dah....sure you defend yourself, please make a case for the administrative raises here!
If you go to Career Cast.com which is a national company that finds jobs for many people, it lists worst jobs, best jobs, most stressful jobs, etc. It has teachers as #4 in terms of the most stressful.
"The middle school principals salary is comparable to salaries in the majority of districts."
No look at the student population and the fact that it is only 2 years with the kids. Is this position over paid? Like what happened to a job only worth so much? What if another adm. making 130,000.00 wanted to take this job do they carry that salary with them? Ms.S did it when she went from MCM to BW. Is something wrong with this picture?
Not one of you can convince me that academics matters to this school board or administration. Actions speak louder than words.
Last year, the extra curricular athletic budget was about $880,000. This year, with "cuts" it is now up to $910,000.
Last year, the extra curricular academic budget was about $240,000. This year, it is $217,000.
Career Cast.com lists Photojournalism as the #4 most stress full job for 2011. It is the same list as the msnbc reports. I am not disputing that teachers have a stressfull job. What year are you looking at? I am not seeing it at:
http://www.careercast.com/jobs-rated
"Last year, the extra curricular athletic budget was about $880,000. This year, with "cuts" it is now up to $910,000. Last year, the extra curricular academic budget was about $240,000. This year, it is $217,000."
That was LAST year and the year BEFORE. THIS YEAR (2011-2012) sports is actually down to $848,000 and academics is now down to $215,000. Although I do agree, last year they did cut the academic budget to give the money to sports and yes our current school board and administration agreed to this.
This year, more cuts to academics. It is the sad state of public "EDUCATION".

WHERE in my post did I say the admin raises were okay? Just because I defended teachers did't mean I agree with the admin raises. Sheesh. Wasn't defending myself, as I no longer teach. I needed money and found a better paying job.

Holy guacamole! Is that academic budget for the whole district?!
I'm with you!
Actually, no one has to defend the admin. raises to you. They work 12 months, have to cope with parents, school board, community, the superintendent and all of the stress and work their positions are involved with. They also work 12 hour days and often get called on weekends. You have no clue. But, if you think it is so great, go get your papers and apply.
To Aug 2 8:20 am.
Cut me a break. They aren't going into the mines, for crying out loud. Since you have such "a clue"
please identify yourself as to which administrator YOU are!
"Holy guacamole! Is that academic budget for the whole district?!
I'm with you!"
No, that is just for for extra curricular activities. it represents athletic extra curricular versus academic extra curricular. The academic number includes extra curricular band activities too, which the school board has recently grouped into the athletic fees. But, when it comes to other things they are academic; whichever is more convenient at the time. I did notice that athletic teams are also now required to pay for their own weekly dry cleaning now. So the district is now at least trying!
Hahaha, tough job? 12 hour days and sometimes weekends, for a whole entire year--oh woah is me--are you kidding? Talk about being out of touch with the real working world and ungrateful!
"
WHERE in my post did I say the admin raises were okay? Just because I defended teachers did't mean I agree with the admin raises. "
Well, that is what people were talking about--administrative raises--as stated in this article. Not teachers. Did you read the article and what it is about? It is not about teachers.
To Aug 2 why so bitter? Envy of others is not healthy. Besides if you think that person is an administrator why don't you identify yourself. Look the problem in PTSD is not with the building administrators or the teachers. The issues also aren't their salaries. The problems surround a few board members and one superintendent. Let's not lose focus. Go to the meetings and ask questions.

Agreed! My CHOSEN profession happens to be on this so called top 10 stressful jobs list....teachers overall (I am not speaking only about PT teachers) may have a stressful job but I think I could be pretty stress free if I was paid for 3 months off during the summer??? How about you?
To August 2, 2011 3:48 PM
Again, I do not agree with admin getting raises while so many other people are having to cut back or pay coaches' salaries. I did read the article, I read everything I can find on all issues regarding PTSD. I do not agree with teachers being lumped in with the board and admin in this discussion. The teachers aren't the ones making the bad decisions. They just have to follow whatever they're told to do.
The EXTRACURRICULAR academic budget is for the whole district. How sad it is that the extracurricular athletic budget is FOUR TIMES that of the extracurricular academic budget.
Pay to Play is a mess. Ask the coaches and boosters, especially those in the smaller sports.
Mixed messages are being given by board and admin over
the repercussions of not paying the fee or not paying the lowest salary. They need to get all their people on the same page with the details of this new policy.
Careercast.com does not list teachers in the top 10 of the most stressful jobs.
The coaches were told at the coaches meeting, by a district employee, if the booster group of ten to fifteen parents, does not pay for the coach or the assistant coach, the district can remove one of those positions. Not one school borad member was present at the meeting. At a recent booster meeting we were then told by a school board member that was not the case.
I have also just learned that half of the kids in plays are called 'walk on's' and do not belong to any form of booster group or official student group. Who the heck pays for them and collects the participation fee for them? What salary do they pay for? Who pays $25 an hour for the bad kids that are in detention? Are they assessed a fee?
I have a lot of questions about this pay to play and having families pay for coaches. Apparently a lot of people have questions, but there is nobody around to answer them! Doesn't this school board and administration realize that several of the Fall activities have already started. Once again, they have no distinct plan and as usual, they make up the rules as they go along. That is what they are doing with online classes and the graduation project too!
Where are our school board members and why are they not insisting on accountability and asking questions? They look like a bunch of mindless bobble head dolls.
Actually, teachers don't get paid for 3 months off during the summer. They get paid for beginning the 3rd week of August and usually going through the 2nd week of June. It is divided by 12. You probably get 4 weeks off for vacation - if not - many do. So, the teachers get about 7 weeks off. And no, I am not a teacher. Just figure it out. If you think it is so great, go become one.
Well isn't this just nice? My booster group of 10 people has to pay for a $2,500 coach and another booster group of 70+ has to pay for a $1,800 coach.
Please explain to me how this is "fair" to families. Why join boosters? It is optional. Maybe that is the goal; to eliminate small booster groups or smaller athletic teams to save money?
bunch of cry babies.
Teachers are not "paid" for three months off. Teachers defer a portion of each month's salary to spread over the 10 week summer vacation.
It is a shame that some have ruined it for the masses. We have seen the best of this district in the past and now we have no where to go but down. Face it the few cry babies and their super and board supporters are driving quality employees away and driving our district into the ground. We have a pathetic district and it is a shell of the past. I remember Dr. B, Dr. S. Dr. L, Dr. H, Dr. M, and a slue of others that made us great only to be replaced by a sad sack of outsiderers lead by a non resident careless, non child centered idiot. Lets send this leader back to the past where they didn't even choose the education profession for the right reasons. Our kids have and will continue to suffer under this regime. Obviously people like Mrs. G, a board member, has guzzled the Kool Aid.
Pay to play =
new ptsd fee +
pay for sponsor/coach +
equipment +
required fundraisers +
booster fees +
pay to watch the games +
pay for 'required' camps
If you have more than one kid and they each do more than one sport, you are into the thousands; especially if they are in a small sport and only a few families are going to pay for the coach. The district has gone too far. I can not believe the school board did not ask ONE question or think about this. I had heard a couple of audience members at the board meeting were able to think outside of the box and think of other extra curricular activities besides sports!
The district is also charging for extra curricular groups that students are REQUIRED to participate in as part of the curriculum for a particular course. According to title 22 that is ILLEGAL -- here come the lawsuits!!!!!
The kids have already started practicing for Fall activities and if you are having trouble making ends meet, then your kids can not participate!
Well guess what? We went with our student to see guidance this week. I have a student that is a junior. The online class does not fit into the schedule. The online course is only offered during the time as the other core courses my child is required to take. We were told "well, maybe next year".
Well, maybe my child can take her top notch PSSA's, ACT's and SAT's; and graduate from a school district that will be happy to accommodate her academically. The "online" courses PTHS has are not even online! My daughter has taken a real online course, but it does not qualify for the in-the-classroom-online course that PTHS requires.
The district has been cutting academic extra curriculars to give to athletics for years. That is not new. That is what matters most to the taxpayers and administration in PTSD.
I really understand that we have a lot to be thankful for and this is a fairly decent school district. Just imagine the potential if we had a school board and administration that actually cared about academics and education. The communication, or lack thereof, at the high school level in this school district is horrendous.
Latest "Bus Safety" procedure: kids can't go on another route with a parent's note. So what happened? Did some kid forge a note and the administration response has been to shut it all down? Much like when some stupid kid stepped in front of a teacher's car at McMurray elementary, they lawyered up the walker note to the point of absurdity. Is this a Zetty-ism? Why can't they just deal with the rule-breaker or incompetent walker rather than penalizing the entire flippin district? If we treat all the kids like criminals, all we are teaching them is that administrators and possibly all adults are complete idiots and should be disobeyed as much as possible. If we can't give the kids some very minor discretion within the PT bubble, how can we possibly let them drive, go to college or even - gasp - think on their own? They will spend so much effort overcoming the PTSD ministry of silly rules that they will be stuck in rebellion mode for years before they figure out they no longer have anything to rebel against.
Please, can we go to meetings to deal with things and stop rehashing the old? Yes, we know that many, many administrative and non-administrative employees would have stayed here but left because they didn't see the leadership needed. It just isn't there. Yes, it took months to replace these people and a lot of excellent people wouldn't apply here. Yes, people are upset with most but not all board members. Yes, some people make money we wish we made. Now, let's go to the meetings and ask questions about what the super. did not explain to us. Pay for pay, online courses, etc. Pack the board meetings. Yes, we know our district is not even close to what it was a number of years ago. So we have to go to meetings.
The bus change would have to have come from the superintendent. She over-reacts to everything and never listens to anyone's input when they try to help. Why do you think Sulkowski and Merante didn't stay. Why do you think folks didn't want to come here.
Did you know that all new Kindergarten and first grade students who move into Peters, regardless of where they live, will be sent to BH and all new 2nd. and 3rd. grade students will be sent to PV?
I did a little research -- the policy regarding bus transportation has not been reviewed by the Board since 2005. I'm assuming that the new decision that prohibits students from riding another bus is the superintendent's. This creates hardship for many, many working families! It is not just a "social" issue; it is an economic issue for families who rely on this transportation for student safety and child care. Please contact the superintendent and Board members asap, as this is not in the best interest of children in our community. We pay for the transportation....we have a right to request how it is to be used!

Safety Update: Stadium Event Procedures
As we continue to look for ways to improve safety not only within our Buildings, but at District events, the following new procedures will be effective for all Stadium events for the 2011-2012 school year:
Students in grades 8 and under are not permitted in the Stadium without parental supervision. Any student in grades K-8 and younger entering the Stadium, must be accompanied by an adult.
High School students entering without an adult must show their student ID at the gate.
Student tickets for all football games will be sold prior to all home games for $2 each in all school buildings; all football tickets sold at the gate will be $5 each.
To provide the most secure environment, all spectators must remain in the bleachers throughout the game unless they are en route to/from the restrooms or concession stands. No one will be permitted to stand and watch the game at the field fence.
Any spectator, regardless of age, who is under the influence of alcohol/drugs, using offensive language or displaying offensive behavior will be ejected from the game immediately.
Thank you for your support and assistance as we work to provide the safest possible environment for all students and guests.
Another wonderful email blast. I wonder if these new procedures will be enforced. Oh, wait...this is the bubble of Peters. The rules will only be enforced on a select few.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN IN BOTH GRADES! They are split between two schools?
I actually laughed my way through the latest email blast about the new stadium attendance procedures!!
All I have to say to the district is "good luck with that".
IF enforced and it "works"...you've effectively reduced attendance at games, reducing $$$$$ revenue along with it. Middle school kids parents will not attend, the kids will find sitting still "no fun" and find other entertainment. How many high school kids know where their ID is?
I understand there is a problem with tweens hanging out around the fence...deal with it in a realistic way, please.
More madness......who is in charge of this school district it is being run as dictatorship...latest email you are not allowed to stand at the football games......so Czar Nina where would you like all the Peters fans to sit? On the visitors side since there is not enough room for everyone to fit on the home team side? What next? WTH?
"Oh, wait...this is the bubble of Peters. The rules will only be enforced on a select few."
so true! i have heard of board members showing up at summer camps and literally screaming at kids telling them they were not following the school district dress policy. too bad they do not do that during the school day. they will enforce policy on others but not their own kids. other districts have also had similar policies on friday night football games for years. i am glad ptsd is finally doing that. friday night games are not community baby sitting service.
So, if I am in 8th grade I can be in the high school band. I can be on the high school swim team. I can attend any evening events in the HS auditorium such as plays, musicals, concerts by myself. But, if I want to go to a high school football game I can't go unless my parents go. That's the way to promote school spirit for middle school kids getting ready to go to the high school. Oh, I get it. Let's punish everyone again, kind of like we did with walkers, and bus riders, and - need I go on?
"August 10, 2011 11:00 AM

ONE CAN ONLY HOPE that some sense be instilled into this board. She is the best hope we have..she has a clue and cares about all kids, not just the athletes. She is a lifelong PT resident and GETS it!
I can not wait to see this enforced:
"Any spectator, regardless of age, who is under the influence of alcohol/drugs, using offensive language or displaying offensive behavior will be ejected from the game immediately."
That certainly can not include entitled parents screaming profanities, can it?
I think their needs to be something done about kids behavior at games. I do not see how the "must be seated" thing is going to work...the stands are FULL with all those kids standing up every game. Will they allow them to sit on the "away" side? They aren't even allowed to walk past the away side! Where are they going to sit?!
"Yes, we know our district is not even close to what it was a number of years ago."
AMEN TO THAT!!!!!!!!!! and we will never get back there with the leadership we have.
Kids, especially the middle sschool kids don't go to the football game to watch the game. It is a social event with walking around built into it. As long as they are behaving what is the harm? If you are out of touch you might reqire them to sit during the game. Perhaps uniforms are next.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN IN BOTH GRADES! They are split between two schools?
August 11, 2011 1:26 PM
Yes, they will be split. At least the administration has reconsidered busing and will transport all children to each school. Wonder how that is going to work out?
...."i have heard of board members showing up at summer camps and literally screaming at kids telling them they were not following the school district dress policy. too bad they do not do that during the school day."
That is nonsense. What are you talking about? Are the summer camp(s) on school property? If it is a school sponsored event that is held outside, during summer and the temperatures are hot, it is unrealistic and down right dangerous for students to follow the school dress code policy too strictly. I agree, enforcing a dress code during school hours would be a much better starting point than screaming at kids during a summer camp.
Wait, board members will not follow through to see that curriculum policy they create is appropriate for students, yet they will holler at kids during a summer camp about the dress code?
Yes, they will be split. At least the administration has reconsidered busing and will transport all children to each school. Wonder how that is going to work out?
August 14, 2011 12:35 PM
What if you have a kindergardener at one school and a 2nd or 3rd grader at the other...bus time at the children's bus stop could be a mess.
Wait, board members will not follow through to see that curriculum policy they create is appropriate for students, yet they will holler at kids during a summer camp about the dress code?
August 14, 2011 4:50 PM
They cannot wear tshirts with the sleeves torn off in hot weather off school propertiy because apparently a wee bit of the sports bra shows.
YET...certain girls get away with camis as tops and have their bellies showing AT SCHOOL.
August 13, 2011 11:18 AM
I think age requirement for the football game is punishment for all because of the behavior of hundred or so kids. I used to go to every football game, until the kids started hanging out in front of the concession stand. They shove each other into other people standing in line and the language they use is filthy. I am glad the district is finally trying to do something about it. Other schools have done it for years. Not many 'walk' around anymore. That is probably what they tell their parents they do, but that is not what they do.
Here is an idea: Maybe we could get the crazy board members to go to the football games to enforce/scream at the kids not following school rules! Yes, please tell what you are talking about with regards to board members screaming at kids. Was it football because they practice without shirts when it is hot out or was it cheerleading because of their most recent scantily clad event?
"They cannot wear tshirts with the sleeves torn off in hot weather off school propertiy because apparently a wee bit of the sports bra shows."
At least we know it wasn't a cheer leader event. They show far more than just a peek of a sports bra or a bra strap!
Does this district never tire of giving out incorrect and inaccurate information? The poswer school instruction are yet another example of putting the cart before the horse. Do they not have anyone that tests this stuff?
It was loud and clear at the school board meeting that once again the district is trying to remove academic awards and administration likes to play games with words, trying to hide what is really being done.
"I think age requirement for the football game is punishment for all because of the behavior of hundred or so kids."
Where have you been. I have never ever seen hundreds or so kids behaving to the point that we have to have such new rules under the guise of "safety". It is nothing but more control freak stuff.
Here is an idea: Maybe we could get the crazy board members to go to the football games to enforce/scream at the kids not following school rules!
It doesn't matter this is an unenforceable rule. Who has the time and where will all the manpower come from. This is really a joke. I don't want our high paid administrators chasing around kids just to have them sit in a seat. No way. Here we go again just another example how far away from education we have gotten.
Why would board members have the right to "scream" at anyones child when they do not even discipline their own? They are servants of the taxpayers not employees of the school district...better not be screaming at mine. Clean up your own homes before you come after ours.
